TORONTO – Parts of Ottawa were still under lockdown Wednesday afternoon after a soldier was shot while guarding the War Memorial near Parliament Hill.

The events started at 9:52 a.m. when police received « numerous calls » about a shooting at the War Memorial. Witnesses reported seeing the gunman get into a car and head toward the Parliament Buildings.

Soon afterwards, police descended on the area, closing off many streets. Traffic cameras showed empty streets leading up the immediate area.

In front of Parliament, it was another story. Dozens of police cars were seen, shouts of armed officers to media and those in the area rang out. The whole event took place in a radius of less than a kilometre.

OTTAWA, Ontario (CBS News/CBSDC/AP) — A soldier standing guard at Canada’s National War Memorial in Ottawa has been shot by an unknown gunman, who was later killed in a shootout inside the Parliament building, police say.

Witnesses said the gunman was carrying a rifle, and described dozens of shots ringing out in the Parliament building.

The Parliament itself remains on lockdown. Royal Canadian Mounted Police warned people in downtown Ottawa to stay away from windows and rooftops.

The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa is on lockdown.
